Data Visualization in Healthcare: Enhancing Data Skills for the Next Generation of Professionals

How to Engage Students on Data Visualization

In today’s data-driven world, data visualization helps analyze and share massive amounts of data and supports informed decision-making. With this in mind, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and Tableau convened an expert panel of data analysts, educators, and visualization experts to explore the best practices of data visualization and develop a curriculum to train the next generation of health and healthcare professionals.

Key findings

In today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment, it’s essential for data analysts, researchers, clinicians, and others to keep up with trends and have a good understanding of how the healthcare system works. This will aid in curating and visualizing meaningful, actionable data.

Data visualization is not an innate skill. It takes time to hone the required skills and be able to objectively approach the data and formulate the right narrative.

Educators should consider projects to help assess students’ grasp of the coursework. Opportunities for students to participate in real-life work helps build engagement and helps students practice skills needed in their careers.

Data analysis cannot occur in silos. Effective data analysis requires collaboration with all stakeholders to gain a deep understanding of the end-users’ needs and determine the best way to visualize the information.
