Position Statement

Explain how your professional skills, abilities, and strengths complement the CCHIIM mission?

My extensive background in health information management, healthcare administration, and education aligns seamlessly with the mission of the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM). Through my academic achievements, professional experience, and dedication to the advancement of the field, I am committed to ensuring the competency of professionals practicing health informatics and information management worldwide.

With a Doctor of Health Administration (DHA) from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, an MBA in Healthcare Administration, and a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management, I have built a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of health information management. My credentials as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) since 1999 and Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) since 2018 further demonstrate my expertise and commitment to professional excellence.

As an instructor in the Health Information Management and Health Services Administration programs at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, I actively contribute to the education and preparation of future HIM professionals. I teach a range of courses, including medical coding, reimbursement systems, healthcare finance, legal aspects of healthcare, and healthcare information systems. My role allows me to mentor students, instill best practices, and reinforce the importance of professional competency in health informatics and information management.

Beyond academia, my professional experience spans two decades as Vice President of Business Operations for a multi-faceted healthcare organization. This role provided me with hands-on experience in revenue cycle management, compliance, coding accuracy, and healthcare administration. I understand firsthand the importance of maintaining high professional standards in health information management and ensuring that industry professionals are equipped with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving healthcare landscape.

My contributions to the field extend beyond teaching and administrative roles. I have authored peer-reviewed textbook chapters, reviewed journal articles, and served as a subject matter expert for coding publications. I have also presented at national, international, local, and state conferences on topics related to interprofessional education, coding updates, and healthcare information management best practices. These contributions demonstrate my dedication to knowledge dissemination and continuous professional development within the field.

Additionally, I actively participate in professional organizations, including the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the Louisiana Health Information Management Association (LHIMA), where I currently serve as a Nominating Committee member and in July 2025, the Nominating Committee Chair. My engagement in these organizations reflects my commitment to upholding the integrity of the profession and supporting the next generation of HIM professionals.

Given my background, expertise, and commitment to advancing health informatics and information management, I am well-positioned to contribute to CCHIIM's mission. I am passionate about maintaining high standards for professional certification and ensuring that individuals entering the field possess the necessary competencies to drive healthcare forward. Serving as a commissioner would allow me to leverage my skills, experience, and leadership to support the certification process, advocate for excellence in HIM practice, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the profession.
