Biography

Makema Massey, MHL, RHIT, CCS, CPC, CRC, CPMA, CPC-I is the Manager of Risk Coding at Optum and a Professor of Healthcare Informatics at American National University. She has worked in medical coding and healthcare informatics for over 10 years and has a passion for paving the way for the future of healthcare and medical coding. Massey's volunteer experience includes PCAP: CEE Professional Certificate Approval Program Review Team, 2021-2023, Hillsborough Community College Advisory Review Board 2019-2020 as well as various charities. 

Position Statement Question

What makes you uniquely qualified as an educator or practitioner to serve on the Council for Excellence in Education? (Please include what capacity/degree level of programming in academia.) 

I am uniquely qualified as an educator and practitioner to serve on the Council for Excellence in Education in certification preparation, Associates, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and in process of obtaining Doctoral level of programming in academia. My qualifications allow me to serve those seeking education and guidance on multiple levels to be able to reach healthcare professionals from varying backgrounds, levels of profession, and differing educational backgrounds. I seek to include, empower, educate, and advise those in the health information profession of the future in a new way while supporting AHIMA’s vision, mission, and strategies to move the needle on additional opportunities for those who are here and those to come. Thank you.
