Enter AI: Panel Reports how AI Impacts their CDI Programs and Organizations

By Paula Mauro

Before artificial intelligence (AI) entered the business world, it likely entered your living room.

AI has probably helped improve, for example, your Netflix experience. AI helps Netflix suggest your next movie or series, based on your ratings of what you’ve watched before.

When you’re running late, six blocks from the restaurant, on foot, wearing the wrong shoes for jogging, and your dinner date texts to say they’re already there, AI on your phone gives you one less thing to worry about by suggesting a reply: “On my way.”

In March of this year, AHIMA and Iodine convened a panel of three clinical documentation integrity (CDI) leaders to discuss how applying AI and mobile technology to their work benefitted both their CDI programs and their organizations overall.

Experiences shared during the panel, “Using Insights from Data to Improve Your Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Practice,” included:

  • Within the first month of adoption, the physician response rate went up from 65 percent to 100 percent, at UPMC Western Maryland in Cumberland, MD. Coding professionals were able to final-code sooner and cash flow improved.

  • AI mobile technology gave the health information management department new insights into how to tailor education to individual providers’ and coders’ needs at Vibra Healthcare, based in Mechanicsburg, PA.

  • Panelist Sheila Duhon, eMBA, RN, CCDS, CCS, A-CCRN, the national director of CDI for Steward Health Care, LLC, noted AI-enabled software can be configured to optimize the time, skillset, and impact of CDI specialists. “We don’t want to go back to the dinosaur age of CDI, where we have to cull through every medical record to find that needle in a haystack,” she said.

You can also learn more about AI during AHIMA22 Global Conference. This event is an annual highlight on the health information industry calendar, where passionate professionals connect with thought leaders and innovative vendors leading the latest advances in the healthcare space. To hear about Iodine’s insights on CDI and healthcare, be sure to check them out October 9–12, at Booth #639 in the exhibit hall at AHIMA22 in Columbus, OH.
