Senior Director, Coding Policy and Compliance

Sue BowmanSue Bowman's responsibilities include leading all AHIMA policy initiatives related to coding practice and fraud and abuse prevention, and serving as AHIMA's representative to the Cooperating Parties, a group with direct input into the creation, maintenance, and updating of healthcare codes and guidelines for their use.

Ms. Bowman has provided input on the development of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets and associated resources. Bowman also serves as secretariat on the World Health Organization’s morbidity topical advisory group, which is contributing to the development of ICD-11. She is a leader in the Association’s advocacy initiatives for the US adoption and use of standard classifications and terminologies, including ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and SNOMED-CT. She participates in various AHIMA activities pertaining to the advancement of healthcare data quality and the use of healthcare data standards.

Prior to taking her position with AHIMA in 1995, she served as director of Utilization Review and Data Quality at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia, IL; as a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Health Information Management Association (ILHIMA); and as past chair of AHIMA's Society for Clinical Coding.

Ms. Bowman received a Bachelor of Science in Medical Record Administration from Daemen College in Amherst, NY, and a Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
