Patty Buttner, MBA-HCM, RHIA, CDIP, CHDS, CPHI, CCS, is a director of HIM Practice Excellence for AHIMA. In her role, she provides professional practice expertise to AHIMA members, and technical reviews on AHIMA products and serves as an author and contributor to articles on health informatics, data analytics, coding, and clinical documentation improvement (CDI). In addition, Ms. Buttner served as faculty for Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) Exam Preps, Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) Exam Preps, Data Workshops, and ICD-10-CM/PCS Academies.
Prior to joining AHIMA in 2014, Ms. Buttner worked as a computer-assisted coding (CAC) trainer, providing instruction on the use and application of CAC and analytical and reporting capabilities. She has many years of management and data quality experience working in acute care as an assistant director of coding, and manager of data quality and clinical documentation. Among other tasks, she conducted data quality audits and analysis of CDI key metrics, and participated in regularly scheduled revenue cycle team meetings. Ms. Buttner, in her HIM career, was involved with several EHR implementations and updates. She was a full time instructor and continues to serve as adjunct faculty for a two-year associate level HIM program, teaching a variety of HIM core curricula. For the past 18 years in HIM, Ms. Buttner has worked in various roles in HIM including coding, clinical documentation improvement, and HIM management. Ms. Buttner began her career in healthcare as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Ms. Buttner received both an MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Management and Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics from Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, UT.
