Director, Congressional Relations
Margarita L. Valdez has 10 years of progressive experience working in politics. As a communications director for a Member of Congress in the US House of Representatives, she led national and local media strategies which included booking radio, television and print interviews. As legislative assistant for Chairman Mike J. Rogers, who serves on the Health Sub-Committee for the Committee on Energy and Commerce, she authored outreach materials on legislative issues. In addition, Ms. Valdez has had an active political role during the last five election cycles working on several congressional campaigns and thus fine tuning her knowledge and ability to message both official and political strategies.
She is the principal representative of AHIMA with the United States Congress. In this role she advocates Congress with regard to legislation of interest to the Association. She works to highlight the Association member’s expertise in the healthcare industry; specifically, how they are in the best interest of policymakers, their constituents and healthcare consumers. To ensure open lines of communication, she coordinates advocacy events on behalf of Association members, organizes briefings for congressional staff and meets frequently with members of Congress and their legislative staff.
Ms. Valdez received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Administration & Public Policy from Michigan State University; she also studied Public Policy at Western Michigan University. She currently lives and works in Washington, DC.
