
Director, HIM Practice Excellence
In her role, Ms. Barta provides professional expertise to AHIMA members, the media, and outside organizations on professional practice issues. In addition, she authors materials for and supports AHIMA online coding education, including the AHIMA Coding Basics program. Ms. Barta also serves as faculty for the AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Academies and ICD-10-CM/PCS Coder Work Force Training. Prior to joining AHIMA, Ms. Barta participated in a one-year contract between the AHIMA Foundation of Research and Education and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to determine potential impacts to CMS when converting from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems. Prior to that, Ms. Barta served as a corporate coding manager for a large healthcare system. She has over 30 years experience as an HIM director and coding consultant. She has been an coding and HIM educator for over 15 years, served as an associate dean for health sciences, and was system coordinator for an RHIT program.
As an AHIMA member, Barta participated in various leadership positions and served on various RHIT Program Advisory Boards. Additionally, she was actively involved with the Illinois Health Information Management Association, serving on the Education Committee and as a state coding instructor with the implementation of ICD-9-CM. Ms. Barta received her Master’s of Science in Health Services Administration from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.
