Renaissance for the 21st Century: Leading the Change

Course Content Details

The program content focuses on the following:

  1. Human Behavior in Relationship Systems
  2. Change Management in HIM
  3. Leadership Coaching
Human Behavior in Relationship Systems
Human Behavior in Relationship Systems is based on “Bowen Family Systems Theory,” a theory of human behavior widely used by executive coaches and business consultants to address emotional process and leadership issues in organizations. This theory is the basis for understanding patterns of behavior in relationship systems such as the workplace. Understanding and observing the reciprocal nature of human behavior provides a new way to view leadership, a systems perspective of leadership. This one element distinguishes Systems-based Leadership and Change Management™ from technique-oriented leadership training. We propose to help you change how you think about leadership and about the systems in which you work. Motivated individuals, armed with a new way of thinking, develop new behaviors and their own unique model of leadership, one with which they are comfortable and can meets their goals.

You will be introduced to the basics of the theory and how it applies to organizational behavior. Four basic concepts are presented: (1) the workplace as an emotional system, (2) anxiety in work systems and how it impacts functioning, (3) the basic unit of human functioning is a triangle, and (4) how differentiation of self leads to a reduction in anxiety in an emotional system.

Through a combination of lecture, discussion, case study examples, and individual reflection exercises, you will learn to observe how your organization functions as a mutually interdependent group of individuals forming an emotional system. Learn how to identify the levels of acute and chronic anxiety in organizations and how they impact the functioning of a system. Learn how to observe the systems in which you live and work and how to identify anxiety-driven behavior in yourself and others.

You will learn to observe and identify the behaviors associated with highly effective leadership. Also learn to recognize behaviors that undermine change efforts and to develop strategies to overcome the drag that such behavior places on important change projects. Self-assessing your own behavior on the continuum of functioning will enable you to begin setting your leadership behavioral goals.

Change Management in HIM
Combining principles of Systems-based Leadership and Change Management™ you will learn how to lead EHR change projects. Incorporating CARE’s experience with approaches to EHR change projects and change management principles described by Harvard’s Professor John Kotter, in Heart of Change, the resulting process emphasizes how to avoid the common pitfalls that Kotter identified as frequently undermining the success of projects. Through enhanced awareness of organizational relationships, such as that of the project team to the HIM Department, and of the HIM Department to other departments in the organization, HIM leaders are encouraged to develop plans to actively communicate in ways that inspire cooperation.

Learn to initiate projects by communicating a sense of urgency to gain buy-in from all stakeholders, and to attract backers and allies. Determine ways to select the best people to participate in EHR change projects and the practice crafting a compelling vision for each project.

Reporting progress, reinforcing the benefits gained as milestones are achieved, and communicating changes in the plan that occur during the course of implementing a project plan are essential in keeping the project from losing momentum. Finally, continuing to communicate the accomplishments of the change project after completion prevents the reversal of months or years of progress that sometimes occurs when a key person leaves. By focusing on communications in the context of an emotional system, you will be able to develop a change management and leadership model specific to your own organization.

While combining systems thinking and a pragmatic change management process is key to success, one more element is important to address. Individuals within a work system respond to the anxiety caused by impending change according to their own life history. Recognizing that change always involves transition from one state to another, change leaders learn ways in which transition anxiety can be recognized, acknowledged, and minimized through effective leadership.

Leadership Coaching
The leadership-coaching phase of the program increases the impact of the learning experience by helping you overcome any inertia that might prevent you from initiating a behavioral change. Coaching is an integral part of the learning process and helps you clarify your vision and values and enhances your capacity to influence and lead. Participants are supported as they take responsibility for applying leadership principles in your own organization. The sessions are structured to focus on the participants' experiences with leading the change project plan or other leadership goals they developed during the seminar phase of the program. The sessions offer you a time and safe place to discuss leadership challenges. Coaching helps you learn to think and work more effectively building your ability to become change agents within your organization.
