This session will boost your understanding of the legal implications of privacy and of data breach, as well as the law and technology used to protect privacy.  It will advance your knowledge of approaches for dealing with the difficult legal implications and control issues of portable devices, remote access, and media reuse and data/device disposal.  Handouts will include checklists for policies/procedures to assist your organization in the risk management attendant to privacy and the liabilities for data breach.

Steps for Handling a Loss/Breach/Theft

Even organizations with the best privacy and security programs are likely to take their turn handling an unfortunate PHI privacy event.  It’s best to be prepared. This session will show you the important steps of privacy breach mitigation, communicating with affected individuals, and addressing the media.  You’ll take back a customizable investigation checklist, sample press release, and patient notification letter. 

Privacy Potpourri – Challenging and Unique Operational Issues

Privacy officials continue to face complex, sticky situations every day for which no discrete practices have been established.  This interactive session will address unique privacy concerns as well as approaches to resolution and offer participants an opportunity to share experiences and solicit feedback from peers.  Suggested topics for discussion include: confidentiality of pre and post adoption records, re-disclosures, dictation and transcription privacy practices, PHI disclosures to the military, and many more.

Mock Contract Negotiations with Privacy and Security Issues

Learn from the faculty’s hypothetical practical scenario how to represent your organization’s privacy and security practices in contract negotiations. This session may depict the type of quick thinking you will be called to do.
