Medical Records

Accurate Medical Records Systems

One of the most integral parts of the whole health information management (HIM) process is maintaining and sharing accurate medical records. With the further proliferation of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, the ability to record and handle medical records for effective health information exchange is more important than ever.

In addition to basic billing purposes, accurate medical records systems improve individual patient care. Further, the ability to process and analyze medical records, while still maintaining privacy and confidentiality in healthcare, allows healthcare professionals to examine community healthcare patterns and develop new ways to leverage resources and lower overall healthcare costs.

Information for AHIMA Members

As an organization representing more than 50,000 HIM professionals, AHIMA places great focus on the importance of accurate medical records. To help ensure that AHIMA members and non-members alike are in the best position to create, maintain, and relay accurate medical records in accordance with HIPAA guidelines, we offer a selection of comprehensive online medical records training courses. Topics in these courses include medical coding, electronic medical records, and more.

Electronic Medical Record Storage

Advances in technology have long been a staple in the growth of the healthcare industry. In addition to the actual instruments and devices that doctors and nurses use to diagnose and treat patients, technology, in the form of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, have made the sharing and archiving of medical records a quicker and more efficient process. The nimble nature of electronic records and EMR systems have allowed for a greater degree of healthcare options for patients, doctors, and insurance providers alike.

Careers in Records Management

From speeding up the care process, to devising new ways to cure terminal illnesses, medical records play a very important role. As such, educated HIM professionals with the ability to effectively handle medical records, especially electronic medical records, are provided new opportunities for career growth in the health information exchange process.
