Medical Coding

Quality Healthcare through Quality Medical Coding

With the proliferation of electronic medical records (EMR) systems to help promote a more efficient system of health information exchange, the role of medical coding is perhaps more important than ever. Medical coding has long been an essential practice across many fields of healthcare as a way to accurately and quickly convey important information such as test results, prescriptions, diagnoses, and treatments. Medical coding also helps in expediting timely billing and reimbursement.

On a larger scale, medical coding plays a key role in Health Information Management (HIM) by allowing patient records to remain private while still contributing to analyses necessary to gauge public health patterns and foster a greater degree of public health.

Medical Coding Programs

AHIMA recognizes the significance of accurate medical coding in a modern healthcare system. To that end, AHIMA works to continue upholding a high standard in medical coding through issuing credentials in HIM, medical coding, and privacy. These credentials are designed to leverage experience and education in accredited medical coding programs to ensure AHIMA members meet, or exceed, professional standards of excellence.

To further complement our accredited medical coding programs, AHIMA issues medical coding certification. Specific certificates in medical coding include:

For more detailed information regarding each of these certificates, please visit our Medical Coding Certification page.
