ICD-10 Diagnosis Codes

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a standardized system for the diagnosis of diseases and recording of health information by medical personnel around the world. Using this system of medical diagnosis codes allows hospitals in many different locations and countries to share morbidity and mortality data that is virtually universal in compatibility with the exception of the United States.

The transition from today's current ICD-9 codes to new ICD-10 diagnosis codes will better accommodate today's continuing advances in the field of medical data recording technology. ICD-10 codes have already replaced the old ICD-9 code sets in the industrialized countries around the world, and the United States is currently preparing to make the transition in October 2011.
