HIPAA Training

When the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) passed in 1996, it created a set of uniform standards relating to security, privacy, and data. Since then, new advances in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems and continued Electronic Health Records (EHR) implementation have prompted further evolutions of health information exchange options. Basic HIPAA guideline information, however, still play a crucial role in patient care in terms of privacy and confidentiality in healthcare.

Health information management (HIM) professionals are often at the forefront when ensuring that HIPAA guidelines and standards are upheld. To offer support, AHIMA provides a number of HIPAA training courses and related educational materials to AHIMA members and non-members alike.

HIPAA Guidelines and Instruction

Whether you are looking at HIPAA training as a way to further your HIM career, or simply as a way to be more effective in your current position, AHIMA Continuing Education provides the resources you need, including the Advanced HIPAA Training Program. Designed and created by Train for HIPAA, the Advanced HIPAA Training Program is a six-course program with HIPAA guidelines and compliance as the primary focus. Some topics in the Advanced HIPAA Training Program include:

  • Business Associate Relationships
  • HIPAA Compliance for Health Plans
  • HIPAA Transaction Testing
  • And More

Courses in the Advanced HIPAA Certification Program can also be taken on an individual basis. Each course requires four weeks to complete.

HIPAA Privacy Guidelines

AHIMA also provides HIPAA training focusing on privacy and confidentiality in healthcare: The Privacy Specialty Advancement Program. This HIPAA training program goes beyond basic HIPAA compliance education and is designed to enable HIM professionals to handle unique and sometimes uncommon HIPAA privacy issues.

HIPAA Certification Resources

To offer advanced HIPAA training that fits into your professional and personal schedule, AHIMA hosts a web-based learning option called AHIMA's Continuing Education virtual campus. Further, the AHIMA online bookstore is a valuable source for HIPAA training materials, offering books and audio seminars for all HIM professionals.
