Health Information Exchange

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Systems

Health information management (HIM) professionals work in all facets of healthcare. As such, they deal with different issues relative to health information exchange processes every day. From HIPAA guidelines regulating privacy and confidentiality in healthcare, to ICD-10 implementation, to the physical processes of handling medical records as the industry migrates from a paper-based system to the digital realm, ways to conduct a proper health information exchange are facing some dynamic new elements.

The most dynamic shift in the health information exchange process is, without a doubt, the role computer technology continues to play in the evolution of health information management. Since 1928, AHIMA has made the improvement of medical records its main priority. Electronic Health Records (EHR) implementation and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems present efficient new opportunities. At the same time, the nature of a technology that offers such flexibility, real-time maintenance, and ease of access also carries security issues relating to privacy and confidentiality in healthcare situations.

Health Information Exchange Education

With more than 50,000 members, AHIMA continues to provide education and training opportunities to help foster career growth and bolster the skill sets of HIM professionals nationwide. The area of health information exchange, with its unique reliance on technology, is an area that periodically requires HIM professionals to brush up on their knowledge. Indeed, with delicate patient information in the balance, this is one area that demands significant attention.

To that end, AHIMA offers a myriad of online education opportunities in addition to the AHIMA accredited programs at colleges and universities all across the nation. A diverse curriculum addresses the topic of health information exchange from a variety of angles, assuring AHIMA members can attain the knowledge most relevant to their specific industry responsibilities.

Furthermore, AHIMA offers another valuable resource to HIM professionals in the form of the AHIMA online bookstore. Hosting audio seminars, journal articles, books, and more related to health information exchange and other topics, AHIMA members and non-members alike will find this outlet beneficial in their own career aspirations.
