Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Systems

HIM Professionals and EMR Systems

Throughout the long history of AHIMA, the organization and its members have been dedicated to improving the quality and standards related to medical records. As with all facets of healthcare, the use of computers in everyday practice offers new opportunities for betterment with regard to medical records and their role in health information exchange process. Today, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and EMR systems are rapidly changing the way health information management (HIM) professionals approach medical records.

Either via "born digital" files or through scanned medical records, EMR systems are creating new efficiencies in maintenance and retrieval of medical records. EMR systems also provide new degrees of flexibility in terms of real-time updating and access, all while adhering to HIPAA guidelines relative to privacy and confidentiality in healthcare. The ability of HIM professionals to incorporate the skills necessary to navigate the evolution from paper medical records to EMR systems is not only valuable, it is becoming increasingly necessary.

EMR Systems Resources from AHIMA

To provide informative and practical resources for HIM professionals seeking a greater degree of proficiency in EMR systems management, AHIMA offers an in-depth curriculum of online medical records training courses. Some specific topics covered in these web-based courses address EMR systems through integral components such as medical coding, ICD-9 and ICD-10, and the state of interoperability among EMR systems.

In addition, AHIMA maintains its commitment to AHIMA members and non-members alike by offering resources related to EMR systems and other related advances that usher in an age of electronic health information management (e-HIM). As such, AHIMA offers a comprehensive set of e-HIM® Practice Guidelines. These Practice Guidelines cover information such as data sets, e-signatures, EHR implementation, and more.

Also for AHIMA members and non-members, the AHIMA online bookstore is a valuable resource for books, journal articles, audio seminars, and other resources covering EMR systems and more.
