Compliance in Healthcare: Understanding HIPAA Guidelines

HIM Professionals and the Role of Compliance in Healthcare

In 1996, the passage of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) created a new set of standards relative to the way health information exchange processes can occur, especially relating to privacy and confidentiality in healthcare. HIPAA guidelines mandate compliance in healthcare to help the industry, as a whole, coordinate the administration process of health information management (HIM) and help attain new cost efficiencies in healthcare claims and transactions.

Since 1996, however, there have been a number of advances in the technology related to medical records, particularly Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems and Electronic Health Records (EHR) implementation, as well as further adoption of ICD-10 on a global level. Each of these issues has direct implications regarding HIPAA compliance. As such, AHIMA seeks to provide HIM professionals with resources to learn and integrate different facets of compliance in healthcare in this truly evolutionary period of healthcare information management.

From basic medical terminology and medical coding, to advanced processes dealing with privacy and confidentiality in healthcare (e.g., e-signatures), compliance in healthcare covers a wide range of topic areas. With respect to HIPAA guidelines, however, some of the most popular issues of compliance in healthcare relate to:

  • health plan premium payments
  • health plan eligibility
  • first report of injury
  • health claim status
