WELCOME
Remember your first day of school? Whether you were entering grade school, high school, or college, it was an exciting time, filled with amazing possibilities. Many of us are past the days of riding the school bus, remembering our locker combination, and wondering who to ask to the prom. On the other hand, we're lucky. As adults we can revisit that back-to-school feeling any time we like by returning to the classroom for a higher degree, a professional credential, or simply to enrich ourselves with knowledge. Even better, the excitement that comes from that first day of school and the feeling of not knowing what happens next is soon replaced by the satisfaction and fulfillment you feel after learning something new. AHIMA is a major supporter of continuing education, offering knowledge through its books, Foundation, audio seminars and webinars, Distance Education program, or publications. You can't go back in time, but you can always go back to school with AHIMA! As ever, I'll close with a quote. Architect Louis Sullivan once had this to say about teaching and learning. "To teach is to touch the heart and impel it to action." Best, Please follow us on Twitter for regular updates on AHIMA and HIM news! You can also network with your AHIMA peers on Facebook and LinkedIn. |

August's Question of the Month asked, "Where do you go for advice about your career and/or life?" Here are your answers. I have two very good friends who are both credentialed HIM professionals. They have been in the field longer than me and have excellent business sense. Our 18-year friendship has seen many personal and professional changes, and their advice in both areas has never steered me wrong. I just finished going to school for Medical Billing and Coding and am a new member of AHIMA. I am 63 years old. and after having several jobs in the medical field and getting laid off, I decided to go back to school. I have a diploma in medical billing and coding. I am now trying to get a job in the field. My school placement office is also working with me and my resume to get something. I enjoyed the classes I took and am looking forward to using what I know. I am currently working on a CCA certification. With the help of my school manager and my work I seek to get [my CCA] sometime within the next year. I like your thoughts on the difference between career and job. I look forward to reading other articles from AHIMA and possibly getting some of your publications. Thanks for the insight.
Get Certified in Privacy and Security ARRA has earmarked more than $19 billion to increasing the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). The privacy and security of these EHRs is a key concern. Now, more than ever, experts will be sought out to ensure that appropriate measures are being taken to protect health data. The Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) certification ensures advanced competency in designing, implementing, and administering comprehensive privacy protection programs. Achieving the CHPS designation can help you build your expertise and put you in a position of authority on privacy and security issues. For more information about CHPS and other AHIMA certifications, visit here. Please note that the certification section of the AHIMA Web site has a new look! It's been streamlined and reorganized to make it more informative and easily navigated.

The AHIMA Foundation has posted a new online scholarship application form for the second round of 2009 applications, with a submission deadline of October 31. The online format combines both undergraduate and graduate applications into one form, with specific sections for each type of applicant. Applicants may save and continue work on the application up until the submission deadline. During the first round of applications (which had an April 24 submission deadline), 39 students received scholarships, with a total of $50,800 awarded. A revision has been made to the form for recommendations. We are using an e-mail notification system for notifying those who will write recommendations. The form is a series of questions rather than a letter. Applicants are encouraged to notify those persons who will respond to recommendation requests ahead of time so they are prepared to provide a recommendation. We are also requesting that all transcripts arrive no later than November 15. Applicants are encouraged to check with the campus office that issues transcripts and verify the timing for mailing transcripts. Applications without the appropriate transcripts will not be considered. The application form, instructions, document templates, and other information about the Merit Scholarship Program can be found at the AHIMA Foundation Web site. If you have questions about the application process please contact Carol Nielsen (312) 233-1175, or carol.nielsen@ahimafoundation.org.

Strike when the ink is wet. That is the motto of the clinical documentation improvement specialists (CDSs) at Shands Hospital, based in Jacksonville, FL. They routinely “shadow” physicians as part of their clinical documentation improvement program (CDIP), seeking clarification in real-time and making recommendations for how physicians can fine-tune documentation to enable more accurate coding. CDIPs are popular in healthcare facilities looking to capture better documentation. Physicians know the documentation they need for treatment and continuity of care, but CDSs are anticipating additional detail that will later produce more complete and accurate coding. A more thorough description can enhance reimbursement and more correctly reflect the facility’s quality of care indicators. Officials at Shands and other facilities using this technique say they get more out of their CDIPs when documentation specialists are present with physicians in real-time, not querying later via e-mail or paper forms left in the chart. But some challenges, like time management and physician buy-in, also come with the successes. Read the rest of this Journal of AHIMA article!
