This report summarizes the results of the Center's survey data analysis and of qualitative themes obtained through member comments on the surveys and insights provided in employer case studies. In addition to presenting the study observations, the report also presents a series of recommendations for strengthening the HIM profession and AHIMA in the future.

Report of Study Findings
This report summarizes the responses to a spring 2002 survey conducted to gather information and insights about challenges and opportunities facing HIM professionals in the US. The survey collected information on: members and their work, attitudes of members about their profession, and information about members who are employers or supervisors of other HIM professionals.

Data for Decisions: the HIM Workforce and Workplace - Employment of HIM Professionals in the U.S.: Current Patterns and Future Prospects
This report summarizes the findings from case studies conducted with nine bellwether organizations that employ HIM professionals. In addition to presenting the case study findings, the report also presents a series of recommendations from the researchers based on study findings for strengthening the HIM profession and AHIMA in the near future.

This report provides a summary of the responses to the HIM Employer/Supervisor Supplement to the 2002 Member Survey. Areas addressed include workforce recruiting; scope of management, settings, and positions of HIM managers; education of HIM professionals; salary of HIM managers; and manager demographics.

This report provides data and insights on the salaries of HIM professionals in the US It attempts to answer two questions in regards to the salaries of HIM professionals. First, what factors affect the salaries of HIM professionals? And second, how do the salaries of HIM professionals compare to the salaries of other professionals?

 

Data for Decisions: the HIM Workforce and Workplace - Penetration of HIM Professionals in the Fifty States : An Examination of Geographic Patterns of AHIMA Members

As part of the larger study of the health information management (HIM) profession(s) in the United States, a careful analysis of the geographic penetration of AHIMA-accredited education programs and AHIMA-credentialed professionals was undertaken. Building on data from the 2002 AHIMA Member Survey, a series of maps have been prepared to identify geographic variations in the distribution of HIM professionals across the 50 states and DC. The same data have also been analyzed to determine the extent to which a variety of other measures are significantly related to the numbers of professionals.

This report presents many of the maps and summarizes the key statistical analyses performed as part of this penetration study.   The report summarizes patterns of geographic distribution of AHIMA members and relationships that appear to hold special significance for the HIM profession in the US

Report of Study Findings
This report summarizes the responses to a spring 2002 survey conducted to gather information and insights about AHIMA accredited education programs in the U.S. The survey collected information on: characteristics of the program director, education programs, and students, graduates and enrollments, credentials of students, program marketing, job opportunities for graduates, issues facing programs, student experiences in the job makret and geographic variations.

This report summarizes the responses to a survey of students in HIM education programs conducted to gather insights about new entrants to the HIM field and the job market of new HIM professionals in the U.S.

AHIMA's Position Statement on Workforce Shortage
Approved by AHIMA's Board of Directors on July 18, 2002

The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 49 percent growth in the number of health information management (HIM) workers by 2010, making this occupation one of the fastest-growing health occupations. Approximately 6,000 new HIM workers are needed each year to fill new positions and replace those who retire or leave the field. Today, 2,000 new graduates enter the HIM field each year.

AHIMA's position statement outlines a plan of action to address this shortage, including the early 2002 launch of the Workforce Assessment Study.

Recruitment Partnership for the Future

Many health professions have seen declining enrollments in their accredited educational programs over the last several years. HIM programs are no exception: health information technology (HIT) and health information administration (HIA) programs responding to a recent AHIMA survey reported 37 and 31 percent enrollment decreases, respectively. Diminishing enrollment across HIT and HIA programs can jeopardize the survival of professional programs decreasing the number of HIM students and ultimately, HIM professionals.

This article highlights the roles of current AHIMA members in creating long and short term strategies to increase student enrollemnt and the stature of HIM programs across the country.
