General Guidelines

Requests for access to and use of AHIMA and FORE public use research data can be submitted two ways.

  1. Submit your request by using our online application.
  2. Print out a [PDF] application, and fax it to us (along with the proper documentation).

The request cover sheet and all required information must be submitted at the time of the data request in order for the application to be considered. Applicants are strongly encouraged to clearly, succinctly, and specifically address each content area as outlined in the application.

Determining Criteria
The following criteria are used to determine the appropriateness of the release of AHIMA public use research data:
  1. The research protocol for which the data is requested must demonstrate strong research design, including clearly stated objectives and a description of the significance of the study. The request should be submitted via the AHIMA and FORE research data application form and should address the following areas: purpose, statement of objectives, justification for use of requested data, summary research design and methods, evaluation methods, timetable, qualifications of key personnel, and description of end use of data analysis and intended methods of report distribution. The request should also address limitations of the data as applied to the proposed research.

  2. The scope and subject matter of the project should support the current research priorities of AHIMA and its Foundation of Research and Education as outlined in the application.

  3. The requestor must demonstrate the necessary expertise and experience to conduct and complete the study.

  4. The requestor must sign a data use agreement form.

  5. Access to data will not be granted for research leading to the creation of a product or tool the researcher intends to market.

  6. AHIMA shall have first consideration for publication of the primary article or findings forthcoming from projects for which access to data is granted. The grantee shall agree to submit manuscripts intended for publication to the editor of Perspectives in Health Information Management, the Journal of AHIMA, or other AHIMA-sponsored publications, as appropriate. These and all other publications of research results shall acknowledge the use of AHIMA/FORE research data. Exceptions to this submission policy will be considered for circumstances that place a grantee in direct conflict with institutional policies.
