Faculty Development Stipends Eligibility, Funding Priorities, and Eligible Expenses

Eligibility

1.   Applicant must be a credentialed HIM professional and an active or associate member of AHIMA.

2.   Applicant must be a faculty member (full time or 50% part time equivalent teaching load, as defined by your institutional policy) in an accredited HIM associate or  baccalaureate program, an approved HIM master's level program, or an approved coding program. Verification of faculty appointment status is required.

3.   Current year FORE Merit Scholarship recipients are ineligible.

4.   Individuals are eligible to receive one stipend per calendar year.

Funding Priorities and Restrictions

Funds will not be awarded to more than one faculty member from the same school for the same educational activity.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to coordinate applications from their institution.

In general, first time applicants will be given preference over applicants who have received funding previously.  This does not mean that previous recipients should not apply in subsequent years, but simply that preference when funding is limited will be to new applicants.

Applicants are encouraged to describe thoughtful use of resources and cost savings planned (ie. sharing of transportation or hotel charges with other attendees, reasonable estimates for meals and other per diem expenses).

It is important to clearly address how the proposed activity meets the states goals of the Faculty Stipend Program:

1.  Expedite curriculum innovation and development in e-HIM content areas;

2.  Research and develop new methods of teaching, evaluation, and assessment in the HIM learning process;

3.  Support faculty in maintaining the highest standards of knowledge and practice in e-HIM;

4.  Integrate new technologies effectively into the HIM learning process;

5.  Strengthen the capacity of HIM academic programs to address emerging issues in design and implementation of the electronic health record at all levels of healthcare delivery, in support of an electronic health information infrastructure.

Eligible Expenses

Stipends can be used to cover the following types of expenses associated with professional development:

•  Registration fees, conference fees, tuition fees or other fees associated with the scheduled activity

•  Books or other required supporting materials

•  Reasonable travel and loding expenses, if required by and directly related to the funded activity

Stipend funds can not be applied to fund academic experiences currently covered by the FORE Merit Scholarshipprogram.  For scholarship support for work toward a terminal degree, apply through the FORE Merit Scholarship program.
