Management of Virtual HIM Departments

Deborah Kohn

Regardless of a healthcare organization’s type, ownership, size or mission health information management (HIM) departments no longer need to be physically tethered to provider organizations. Today, HIM departments can be physically removed from the provider organization and exist as remote, virtual departments. This presentation will discuss the transition to virtual HIM departments by analyzing core functions that can be performed remotely along with the technologies that can be deployed to support those functions.

9:30–10:15 a.m.

Health Information Management and Health Informatics: Core Competencies for Individuals Working with EHRs

Deborah Kohn

HIM professionals are realizing many new and revised roles and competencies are now offered as a part of the electronic health record's (EHR's) evolution. For example, information management roles require a unique set of skills to assist in system-wide implementation efforts. In this session, new core competencies in HIM, informatics, and EHRs will be identified to increase your understanding of how these new skills prepare you for the future.

The Expansion of the Concept of EHRs

Deborah Kohn

In many cases, patient-related e-mail messages, instant messages, text messages, and voice mail messages must be considered components of the EHR. This presentation will discuss managing protected health information (PHI) in such messages and why these messages must be managed like other EHR documents.

11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

EHR and PHR:  Where Two Worlds Meet

Deborah Kohn

Healthcare organizations and providers have always relied upon conversations with patients or other care providers  for obtaining up-to-date information regarding one’s health status and medication usage. As patients begin to use personal health records (PHRs), the gathering of information is shifting to a more “consumer-oriented” format. In this session, best practices will be identified for incorporating PHR information into the organizational EHR record.

Enterprise Content Management (ECM)

Sandra Nunn

HIM professionals are expanding their traditional roles of HIM to incorporate the advisement, management, and regulation of nonclinical records through enterprise content management activities. The core principles that HIM professionals bring to managing electronic clinical data and records can make them an integral part to any ECM program. In this session, identify how ECM connects to HIM and learn key principles in managing an enterprise business record.

2:15–3 p.m.

Legal and Regulatory Dimensions of an Electronic Record Environment

Sandra Nunn

The convergence of litigation and electronic records is raising the bar on managing content from multiple systems and departments. This need is introducing healthcare to new requirements such as e-discovery, litigation response teams, legal holds, and renewed emphasis on HIPAA security. In addition, new regulations such as Red Flags Rules and medical identity theft prevention are in the forefront of EHR adoptions. In this session recognize new twists to some distinguished HIM practices and discover where your organization should be in the complex legal landscape.

3–3:15 p.m.

Break

3:15–4:15 p.m.

Electronic Record Governance

Sandra Nunn

Quick, which is better for an EHR system: structured data or unstructured data? What do you need to know about semi-structured information? These terms, asdefined in electronic environments, are not hierarchical to each other, nor are they mutually exclusive. This is sometimes what makes system implementation of data queries so difficult.   In this session understand the difference between the terms, discover why a mix of each data is needed, and gain knowledge on the governance of each.

4:15–5 p.m.

The Sixth Domain—HIM Future Competencies

Sandra Nunn

“Learn the past, watch the present, create the future.” This quote from the Buddha sums up the current state of healthcare. The HIM professional is in an excellent position to forge ahead in the electronic healthcare age. This session will focus on the future of HIM, expansion of skill sets, and what you can do to prepare for the next step in managing EHRs.
