Debra S. Nelson, RHIT Director of HIM, Trinity Health |
Debra Nelson was instrumental in navigating the journey toward implementing an electronic health record (EHR) in both the hospital and outpatient environments. She was partly responsible for ensuring the EHR met the needed requirements for a legal health record. Nelson also serves as one of her organization’s legal liaisons between healthcare personnel and legal counsel. Chairing several committees such as the HIPAA Corporate Team, Legal EHR Team and the Medical Identity Team have given her a unique perspective and understanding of the legal EHR.
Nelson has 30 years of experience in managing health records within small and large facilities. She is a frequent speaker on HIPAA and legal EHR issues not only for her state organization but also nationally for organizations such as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), American Bar Association (ABA), and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Nelson is currently the President of the Minot Chapter of American Business Women and is the North Dakota Health Information Management Association’s (NDHIMA) legislative director.
