Donald Mon, PhD Vice President Practice Leadership AHIMA |
Donald T. Mon leads the Association's professional practice initiatives, which include a strategic focus on electronic health information management (e-HIM®). Mon also represents AHIMA to help in the development of national policy and industry standards for electronic health records (EHRs), personal health records (PHRs), and health information exchange (HIE).
Mon currently is a member of the board at Health Level Seven (HL7) and co-chairs the HL7 EHR Work Group; is a co-facilitator for the HL7 PHR Work Group; and has served as an industry liaison for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology. He is also on the board of the Public Health Data Standards Consortium (PHDSC) and has served on numerous EHR, PHR, and secondary data use expert panels.
With a career that spans 30 years of healthcare experience, Mon has a strong record of leadership in the field of health information management (HIM) through research, practice, and advocacy. Prior to joining AHIMA in 2003, he served as assistant dean and chief information officer of the Biological Sciences Division and the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He has also helped design, develop, and maintain large scale databases and information systems for Catholic Healthcare West in San Francisco; University of Illinois at Chicago; Premier, Inc.; the Oracle Corporation; and Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center.
Mon has presented at conferences and seminars on the regional and national level. He has been published in numerous healthcare journals on topics that include EHRs and PHRs, health information technology and policy, HIE, data warehousing and data mining, career advancement in HIM, and customer service. Additionally, Mon has peer-reviewed journal articles and books for the American Medical Informatics Association.
