Professor Koppel’s work in medical informatics reflects his 40 year career as an applied sociologist and professor of statistics, ethnographic research, survey research, sociology of work and organizations, and medical sociology. Dr. Koppel has taught at the University of Pennsylvania for the past 17 years. For the last seven years, he has been the principal investigator of Penn’s study on hospital workplace culture and medication errors, at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (School of Medicine). In addition to his role as principal investigator, Koppel is also an affiliate faculty member at Penn’s Medical School.
Much of Professor Koppel’s recent work focuses on the impact of technology and the workplace on medication error. He has also examined workflow in medical workplaces, medical sociology, the link between technology and jobs, and ethics in social research. Dr. Koppel has authored or co-authored more than 160 academic papers and articles, several monographs, and several books and book chapters. Koppel is the recipient of the William Foote Whyte Award, the Robert E. Park Award, the Distinguished Career Award, and several other awards for his work in sociological practice. He has served as president of all of America’s associations of applied sociologists.
