Experience a dynamic training program that uses various teaching methods to help coding professionals become proficient in coding with the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems while preparing them to train other coding professionals in these systems. The academy includes a combination of two online courses (self-paced) and three days of face-to-face training. The online courses provide basic training in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS and are required to be completed prior to the workshop. The three-day workshop focuses on engaging the trainer with in-class intermediate and advanced ICD-10-CM/PCS coding exercises, while modeling training techniques. After successful completion of both the online and face-to-face training portions, attendees may complete an assessment in order to receive an AHIMA Trainer Certificate.

Continuing Education Units Available: Completion of both the in-person and distance education components of the Academy earns 32 CEUs.

Prerequisites

Recommended experience for students of the Academy are as follows:

  • Three years of direct experience assigning ICD-9-CM codes, AND
  • One year of training experience or two semesters of teaching experience in an academic setting

Training Modules

The AHIMA Academy for ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainers consists of the following components:

Part 1: Online (web-based, self-paced) training:

  • ICD-10-CM introductory course entitled “ICD-10-CM Overview—Deciphering the Code”
  • ICD-10-PCS introductory course entitled “ICD-10-PCS Overview—Deciphering the Code”

Part 2: Face-to-face workshop:

  • One day of training on ICD-10-CM coding, practicing with various types of cases
  • Two days of training on ICD-10-PCS coding, practicing with various types of cases

Instructional Materials

Integrated throughout the workshop are instructional techniques and tips directed at effectively teaching the material to others. Attendees of the Academy will receive all the materials needed to learn ICD-10-CM/PCS and to then go out and teach it, including:

  • ICD-10-CM/PCS Coder Trainer Manual
    This manual includes intermediate and advanced coding exercises for ICD-10-CM in addition to beginner, intermediate and advanced coding exercises for ICD-10-PCS.  These coding exercises will emphasize all aspects of the two coding classification systems in addition to coding conventions and guidelines.
  • Instructor Guide
    The Instructor Guide will include an agenda, lectures (PowerPoint presentations) and assessments for each chapter in the ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer Manual.  Teaching tips will be embedded throughout the guide providing additional information for the trainers.  An additional section providing information regarding the different learning styles and effective communication skills will also be included
  • ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Code Books
    The code books will be used during the workshop to practice coding cases in both ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.

Free Must-See Attractions

Harry P. Leu Gardens
Guests can enjoy three miles of walkways, rose gardens, a butterfly garden, ancient oak trees, and more. Admission is free on the first Monday of every month. Normal admission is $7 for adults and $2 for children.

Big Tree Park
Visit Big Tree Park, home to Florida’s oldest resident, “The Senator,” a 3,500 years old and 118-foot tall bald cypress tree. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day of nature.

The Town of Celebration
Visit this Disney-made town where you can admire the gorgeous houses, well-groomed yards and magic of Disney living. Admire the Rockwellian atmosphere, let the kids play in the interactive fountain, or stop by the farmers market on Sundays. During winter months, visitors can even see (fake) snow falling.

Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Art
This museum celebrates the famous Floridian best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. The culture of people of African descent is celebrated at this museum, and in late January, they present Zora Festival. Admission is free.

Old Town
This attraction offers weekly events that are completely free to guests. More than 700 motorcyclists rally through the streets on Thursday nights. On Saturday nights Old Town comes to life with a vintage-car parade (exclusively for cars from 1974 and earlier) with more than 300 cars. The Friday Night Cruise welcomes customs, exotics, and special interest vehicles in addition to 1975 to 1987 cars and trucks. Wednesday nights are “Rock at the Clock” themed and feature an Elvis-impersonator and a cruise-in. Visitors must buy tickets for the amusement rides, but admission to Old Town and its concerts and car shows, is free.

Orlando Brewing Company
This is Orlando’s only certified organic brewery. They offer free tours daily at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

A World of Orchids
Visit this 22,500 square foot conservatory, home to some 1,000 orchids as well as other exotic flora. Walk along the path and admire natural exhibits with flowers from Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Australia, and Central and South America. Closed Sundays.

Amusement Parks

Disney's World
Mickey's still king of the hill: or rather, of the very flat land. Spread over an area the size of Boston are: Four theme parks (The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom) and two water parks.

Universal Studios—Orlando
Universal Orlando has two theme parks, Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. The CityWalk area of restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, and three hotels, the Portofino, Hard Rock Hotel, and Royal Pacific Resort.

Sea World
With all the thrills and wonderful animal shows of the other Sea World locations, Sea World Orlando is the place to see various marine and other animals at play. See whales, penguins, manatees, dolphins, and others.

Fun Spot Action Park
In operation seven days a week, Fun Spot Action Center features go-carts, thrill rides, an arcade center and food concessions. The family-fun center is located between Wet N' Wild and the Prime Outlet Mall off of International Drive.

Ripley's Believe It or Not—Orlando Odditorium
Odd and amazing collections are the speciality of Ripley's Believe it or Not Orlando Odditorium. Visitors take self-guided tours of a wide range of exhibits including a collection of South American shrunken heads, a matchstick Rolls Royce, and much more.

Discovery Cove
Discovery Cove is a theme park near Orlando, FL, where guests can interact with a variety of marine animals, most notably bottlenose dolphins. The park is located adjacent to sister parks SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica. In addition to swimming with dolphins, Discovery Cove guests can interact with exotic birds, tropical fishes, rays, and land mammals.

Cirque du Soleil—La Nouba
La Nouba is a mesmerizing and extraordinary avant-garde circus spectacle performed by Cirque du Soleil exclusively in the Downtown Disney West Side area at Walt Disney World Resort.

Cancellation Policy

REFUNDS
AHIMA provides full refunds (less a $75 processing fee) for registration cancellations made through 61 days prior to the date of the first day of the program.  A partial refund of 75% is provided for registration cancellations made between 60 and 46 days prior to the date of the first day of the program.  No refunds are provided within 45 days of the date of the first day of the program.  All refunds are processed within 30 days of receipt. 

To request a refund, submit your request in writing to AHIMA Vice President, Jim Graham (jim.graham@ahima.org or fax: (312) 233-1406).  In the event of an emergency that occurs within 45 days of the program date, please contact Jim Graham.

SUSTITUTIONS
Substitutions (that is, assigning a paid registration to another individual) are accepted through 31 days prior to the date of the first day of the program, provided that the original registrant has not completed the distance education courses included in this program.  A $75 processing fee will be invoiced at that time.  Substitutions are not accepted within 30 days of the program date; no refund will be provided.

RESCHEDULING
Rescheduling (that is, postponing the use of a paid registration to a future instance of the same program) is subject to availability and limited to future instances of the same program currently advertised on www.ahima.org and occurring within six months of the original program date.  Requests received through 46 days prior to the date of the first day of the program will be considered with a $75 processing fee.  Rescheduling is not permitted within 45 days of the program date; no refund will be provided.
