Free Must-See Attractions
Arts Market of New Orleans
Presented by the Arts Council of New Orleans, the Arts Market is a monthly arts fair held the LAST Saturday of every month. Located at Palmer Park in the lovely Carrollton Section of Uptown New Orleans (At the corner of two well-trafficked streets, S. Claiborne Ave and S. Carrollton Ave,) the Arts Market has no admission charge. The Arts Market features handmade, affordable art from local and regional artists and artisans.
The French Quarter
Bourbon Street is in the French Quarter, true, but it is only one street in the French Quarter. So, when you visit, go beyond Bourbon Street. You will find great shopping, music, food, and hotels. The French Quarter is also a vibrant neighborhood with its own school. Most importantly, the French Quarter is a not-to-be missed, living history museum.
New Orleans Cemeteries
The above-ground cemeteries in New Orleans have been a must-see for visitors for the past 100 years. Called the "Cities of the Dead," their hauntingly beautiful tree-lined streets and incredible architecture provide a unique experience.
City Park in New Orleans
City Park in New Orleans is a 1,300 acre park in the heart of the city. A natural bayou runs through it and at its edge. With an antique carousel and miniature train, it's a great place for kids. City Park also encompasses the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Bestoff Sculpture Garden, the Botanical Gardens and one of the largest stands of live oak trees in the world.
Other Attractions
St. Charles Streetcar
While it's wonderful to spend time in the French Quarter, it's also important to remember to get out and see the rest of the city. Hop on the St. Charles Streetcar, and remember, it's a streetcar, not a trolley. The fee is $1 each way, and the best place to hop on is at Canal or Carondelet Streets in the Central Business District.
Aquarium of the Americas
Located adjacent from the French Quarter, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is a stunning place to spend an afternoon in downtown New Orleans. Walk beneath the vivid Caribbean Reef, feed a stingray, become an Adventure Island explorer, and journey the Mississippi River
Louis Armstrong Society Jazz Band
Dedicated to the promotion and preservation of New Orleans Style Jazz, and honoring the most notable and influential individual of the genre, Louis Armstrong. Available for concerts and other national performances.
Swamp Country Tours
Just an hour outside of New Orleans's city center, life is even wilder than on Bourbon Street! Amid the moss-laden Cypress trunks, thick marsh reeds, and brackish watery avenues of the Louisiana bayou lurk local fauna: alligators, nutria, gar, turtles, fish, and birdlife. For nature lovers, Louisiana swamp tours provide a glimpse of some of the most exotically beautiful scenery and wildlife on the planet.
