Experience a dynamic training program that uses various teaching methods to help coding professionals become proficient in coding with the ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems while preparing them to train other coding professionals in these systems. The academy includes a combination of two online courses (self-paced) and three days of face-to-face training. The online courses provide basic training in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS and are required to be completed prior to the workshop. The three-day workshop focuses on engaging the trainer with in-class intermediate and advanced ICD-10-CM/PCS coding exercises, while modeling training techniques. After successful completion of both the online and face-to-face training portions, attendees may complete an assessment in order to receive an AHIMA Trainer Certificate.
Continuing Education Units Available: Completion of both the in-person and distance education components of the Academy earns 32 CEUs.

Prerequisites
Recommended experience for students of the Academy are as follows:
- Three years of direct experience assigning ICD-9-CM codes, AND
- One year of training experience or two semesters of teaching experience in an academic setting
Training Modules
The AHIMA Academy for ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainers consists of the following components:
Part 1: Online (web-based, self-paced) training:
- ICD-10-CM introductory course entitled “ICD-10-CM Overview—Deciphering the Code”
- ICD-10-PCS introductory course entitled “ICD-10-PCS Overview—Deciphering the Code”

Part 2: Face-to-face workshop:
- One day of training on ICD-10-CM coding, practicing with various types of cases
- Two days of training on ICD-10-PCS coding, practicing with various types of cases
Instructional Materials
Integrated throughout the workshop are instructional techniques and tips directed at effectively teaching the material to others. Attendees of the Academy will receive all the materials needed to learn ICD-10-CM/PCS and to then go out and teach it, including:
- ICD-10-CM/PCS Coder Trainer Manual
This manual includes intermediate and advanced coding exercises for ICD-10-CM in addition to beginner, intermediate and advanced coding exercises for ICD-10-PCS. These coding exercises will emphasize all aspects of the two coding classification systems in addition to coding conventions and guidelines. - Instructor Guide
The Instructor Guide will include an agenda, lectures (PowerPoint presentations) and assessments for each chapter in the ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer Manual. Teaching tips will be embedded throughout the guide providing additional information for the trainers. An additional section providing information regarding the different learning styles and effective communication skills will also be included - ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Code Books
The code books will be used during the workshop to practice coding cases in both ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.

Cancellation Policy
REFUNDS
AHIMA provides full refunds (less a $75 processing fee) for registration cancellations made through 61 days prior to the date of the first day of the program. A partial refund of 75% is provided for registration cancellations made between 60 and 46 days prior to the date of the first day of the program. No refunds are provided within 45 days of the date of the first day of the program. All refunds are processed within 30 days of receipt.
To request a refund, submit your request in writing to AHIMA Vice President, Jim Graham (jim.graham@ahima.org or fax: 312-233-1406). In the event of an emergency that occurs within 45 days of the program date, please contact Jim Graham.
SUSTITUTIONS
Substitutions (that is, assigning a paid registration to another individual) are accepted through 31 days prior to the date of the first day of the program, provided that the original registrant has not completed the distance education courses included in this program. A $75 processing fee will be invoiced at that time. Substitutions are not accepted within 30 days of the program date; no refund will be provided.

Please include the name and date of the program as well as the following information for both the original registrant and the substitute registrant: name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. Rescheduling is not permitted within 45 days of the program date; no refund will be provided.
