8:30–10:30 a.m. Preparing to Transition to ICD-10-CM/PCS for Coding Professionals

This presentation will discuss the latest on the implementation dates for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS in the US. Furthermore, in order to understand the impact to a facility, it is important to know the differences and similarities between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. There are numerous uses of coded data, and this transition will have far-reaching impact throughout the industry. This session will focus on the potential impact of transitioning to ICD-10 and identify planning and preparation methods to use during this period. We will discuss how best to prepare for the implementation. The focus of this presentation will be how coding professionals can prepare. Steps can be taken, such as increasing anatomy/physiology knowledge and establishing or improving clinical documentation improvement programs. Coders and other health information management (HIM) professionals will learn what steps they can take now in order to be successful.

10:45–11:45 a.m. Version 5010: Final Rule to Modify HIPAA Transaction Standards for Implementation of ICD-10-CM/PCS

On January 16, 2009, the US Department of Health and Human Services published its final rule on modifications to the HIPAA electronic transaction standards. This presentation summarizes the final rule with a special focus on Version 5010 of the HIPAA electronic transaction standards. It explains the relationship between Version 5010 transaction standards and the ICD-10 code sets and the reason why the modified transaction standards need to be implemented before ICD-10-CM/PCS. This session explains how the final rule will impact HIM professionals and their organizations. It will describe the steps HIM professionals can take to assist their facilities during this period of transition. Participants will receive a list of resources useful for preparing for the modifications.

1–2 p.m. Managing an Effective Query Process

Accurate documentation is the key to ensuring quality coding. Healthcare facilities should establish policies and procedures for assuring the accuracy of documentation by healthcare providers. This presentation will review the process for developing an effective query process. Topics include who to query, when to query, and the types of acceptable queries. The importance of developing provider education and auditing programs is also emphasized.

2–3 p.m. Pay-for-Performance (P4P)/Stimulus Package

Kathleen Catalano, RN, JD, FHIMSS, Perot Systems

This session will provide an overview of the current Pay-for-Performance (P4P) and related transparency climate in the United States. This presentation will include a discussion of P4P trends, key policy issues, CMS and National Quality Forum (NQF) “never events,” healthcare acquired conditions and a review of the salient points of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The quality and efficiency derived from P4P will also be reviewed along with the impact these programs will have on health information management services and professionals.

Auditing and monitoring are essential components of an effective compliance program. This session will provide tips and tools to ensure appropriate physician documentation and compliance. Obtain hands-on auditing experience through relative case studies. Come prepared to challenge your compliance knowledge. Topics covered in this session will include: Tips for auditing and monitoring, teaching physician rules—E/M, evaluation and management services, medical student documentation, consultation documentation requirements. Teaching physician rules—surgical cases and new versus established visits case studies will be presented.

This session will focus on the basics of CPT® coding for peripheral interventions. Enhance your knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic peripheral procedural coding. Challenging case scenarios will be presented to illustrate best coding practices.

1–2 p.m. E/M Auditing—Coding Compliance in a Physician Practice

This presentation will provide the groundwork for conducting a physician practice coding audit. It will focus on the current OIG Work Plan for Physicians in addition to compliance guidelines for physician practices from a coding perspective. Variation in using 1995 and 1997 evaluation and management coding guidelines will be addressed and other FI-specific guidelines will be discussed.

2–3 p.m. Coding Injection and Infusion Services

John W. Ruth, MBA, RHIA, Health Industries Advisory, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP

This session will provide an overview of the 2009 CPT® Injection and Infusion service codes. The appropriate use of these codes in the hospital emergency room and other hospital-based outpatient settings will also be discussed.

3–4 p.m. Advanced CPT Coding for Skin Repair and Replacement

Lynn Kuehn, MS, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA, Kuehn Consulting Company

This session will provide an overview of skin anatomy and advanced skin repair procedures in addition to an advanced discussion of skin substitutes and skin replacement surgery, including coding for routinely used skin substitute supplies. At the conclusion of the program, participants will understand advanced skin repair procedures, such as adjacent tissue transfers, products used as skin substitutes, when they are used, and how to code skin substitute and skin replacement surgery procedures.

Cancellation Policy

If you must cancel your meeting registration, you may either provide a substitute, or cancel your registration. In either case, please notify AHIMA in writing as soon as possible. A $75 processing fee is assessed on all cancellations received two weeks prior to the appropriate meeting date. After that date, the full registration fee will be forfeited unless your registration is cancelled due to an emergency. In an emergency, please notify AHIMA’s registrar of your cancellation via fax, including an explanation for your cancellation. All refunds will be processed within 30 days after receipt.

AHIMA reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a conference due to unanticipated circumstances. In the event of cancellation, registrants will be contacted and the full registration fee will be refunded.
