     VICE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, FOUDATION OF RESEARCH & EDUCATION

     

    AHIMA has an immediate need for a Vice President & Executive Director, Foundation of Research & Education to lead all aspects of the foundation including program, fundraising and development, communications, staff, and fiscal management.  This position is part of AHIMA’s executive team and participates in the Association’s board level planning and is a member of the operations and policy teams.

     

    Responsibilities include:

     

    • Champion for the vision and mission of FORE – communicating that vision to the members and stakeholders of AHIMA, including the Boards of Directors, the staff, corporate affiliates and the external industry community.  Look for ways to build the awareness of the foundation, leveraging its body of knowledge and communicating the need for financial support.
    • The Executive Director recruits, develops and mentors staff to effectively manage the projects and activities of the foundation.   Aspects of the organization.  As a member of the AHIMA senior team, the Executive Director is also responsible for effective staff planning, performance evaluation and succession planning for each position.
    • Effectively engage the FORE Board of Directors and other volunteers to ensure their commitment and motivation and best efforts to achieve the goals of the Foundation. 
    • Recruit and develop new directors and volunteers representing the Foundations diverse stakeholders who will help advance the strategic goals of the foundation.
    • Accountable for high level fundraising and development initiatives, particularly with key corporate relationships.  Put in place a long run plan for sustainable fundraising that will continually build the endowment levels. 
    • Evaluate how the foundation should participate in AHIMA’s initiatives outside the United States.     
    • Work closely with other leaders in AHIMA including those in Business Development, Exhibits & Meetings, Practice Resources, Practice Leadership, and Finance.  Collaborate with them to link research results to AHIMA programs and publications; effectively structure funding initiatives; and coordinate a common face to external partners.
    • Lead the organization in strategic initiatives that help define the foundation’s longer run strategy.  Specifically, lead the evaluation of a Research and Policy Institute to enable FORE to advance its own practice and policy research in conjunction with strategic partners.  Also, consider how government contracts should play a role in the foundation’s longer term portfolio.
    • Manage a budget of approximately $7 million for 2008 and a staff of 6 permanent and 7 contract employees. 

     

    Knowledge, skills, experience, and certifications required to perform the job:

    • Undergraduate degree is required.  An MBA in not-for-profit management is helpful
    • 10-15 years working in a not-for-profit environment, with some of those years acting in a senior strategic and staff leadership role
    • Experience must include responsibility for aspects of fundraising and/or business development which is critical to the success of the organization’s livelihood
    • Proven success in building excellent relationships (both internally in the organization and externally with key partners, advisors and/or board members) as well as in selling and engaging around the vision of the organization.
    • Having worked in the healthcare industry and exposure to quality and data’s role in healthcare delivery are important
    • The candidate will have experience leading a lean staff
    • The candidate must be a strong strategic thinker, have high integrity, bring a positive outlook, and not hesitate questioning or challenging others in a constructive manner. 
    • He/she will be outgoing, able to easily develop strong working relationships, thrive in being a champion for the organization, and have excellent communication skills (formal and informal)
    • He/she must be self motivated, confident, and be able to motivate paid and volunteer resources
    • The candidate must thrive in an atypical not-for-profit culture – an assertive, fast paced, high energy, entrepreneurial environment

     

        

    CAMPAIGN DIRECTOR

    Campaign Manager (newly created position)

    The campaign manager will be responsible for working in coordination with the senior staff and volunteers of the Foundation of Research and Education of the American Health Information Management Association to manage the daily operations of its three year, $4-milion capital campaign.

     

    • Report to the vice president and executive director of the Foundation and work closely with this position to achieve campaign goals.
    • Provide staff support to the vice president and executive director in recruitment of the campaign cabinet and other volunteer committees.
    • Arrange and provide staff support for meetings of the campaign cabinet and other volunteer committees, including volunteer training.
    • Manage day-to-day operations of the campaign, including regular phone contact with campaign volunteers, and serve as the central information point for all campaign activities (including research and strategy development for leadership and major gift cultivation meetings and solicitations).
    • Conduct relevant prospect research on leadership and major gifts prospects and, using this data, provide suggested meeting strategy memoranda to volunteers and staff.
    • In tandem with the vice president and executive director and the annual giving manager, develop and manage a system for tracking the progress of each leadership and major gift cultivation and solicitation.
    • Plan and manage production of appropriate campaign publications and materials, including campaign newsletter, campaign website, campaign brochure and ancillary materials.
    • Plan and manage appropriate campaign cultivation events and activities.
    • Supervise the receipt, tracking, recording and acknowledging all campaign gifts and pledges; monitor the pledge reminder and billing system.
    • Write campaign-related stories for the Foundation’s and AHIMA’s publications.
    • Make regular reports of campaign status and progress to campaign leadership.
    • Other responsibilities as assigned by the executive director of the Foundation.

     

     

     QUALIFICATIONS

    • A minimum of five years of fundraising experience, preferably with a major capital campaign or coordinating the work of several professionals to maintain high morale and campaign momentum;
    • Ability to work with sophisticated volunteer leaders;
    • Strong knowledge of individual giving strategies and proven track record of cultivating and soliciting gifts;
    • Strong leadership skills; management experience preferable;
    • A special attention to detail and talent for organizing complex projects;
    • Exceptional verbal and written skills; ability to make presentations to individuals and large groups;
    • Commitment to the missions of the Foundation and AHIMA and the ability to articulate them;
    • An organized, focused and goal-oriented personality coupled with a high level of initiative, energy and ability to work collaboratively;
    • A high level of personal and professional integrity, with an ability to inspire confidence and cooperation;
    • Grant writing and/or corporate and foundation giving experience helpful;
    • Advanced computer skills;
    • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally; and
    • A baccalaureate degree with preference for an advanced degree.

     

    PRACTICE RESOURCES MANAGER

    This position provides the Association with a range of professional practice support, which includes:

     

    • Managing short- and long-term projects, using the following management skills:
      • Research
      • Planning
      • Facilitation and management of volunteer teams
      • Change management
    • Creating and developing timely resources for the advancement of members in emerging technology disciplines
    • Forecasting future roles and skills for HIM professionals related to information technology and applied informatics
    • Creating and developing position statements, practice briefs and guidelines for publication related to technology and health information exchange between providers
    • Leading or serving as liaison to AHIMA alliance organizations, task forces, and/or practice councils
    • Communicating products and resources in a variety of methods
      • Writing for AHIMA publications and other publications as requested
      • Speaking for AHIMA meetings, CSA meetings and other organizations as requested
      • Teaching in AHIMA seminars and other educational settings
      • Interviews with health care industry and other news sources
    • Responding to member questions and request for resources relative to HIM professional practice

     

    Knowledge, skills, experience and certifications required:

     

    • Work experience as a health information manager with registered health information administrator credentials and background in use of technology to advance the quality of information to support quality health care
    • Have at least ten years of HIM practice experience including experience in a managerial or consulting role and a variety of HIM experience (in terms of healthcare settings and/or positions held).
    • Where knowledge and experience are not complete; either through time or breadth of responsibility, the individual must be able to recognize limitations and seek input from other authoritative sources.
    • A Graduate (Master’s or Doctorate) degree is desirable, but not required.
    • Demonstrated superior written and verbal communication skills, conveying credibility, professionalism and AHIMA values and principles
    • Demonstrated group leadership and facilitation skills in order to direct the activities of volunteer task forces and councils toward a finished, professional product, using advanced project management skills as described above.
    • The ability to research topics thoroughly, assimilate information correctly, and communicate effectively in writing to produce articles, position statements, practice briefs, and guidelines that are focused, accurate and understandable.
    • Demonstrated HIM skills in order to provide sound technical review of products and accurate responses to member questions.
    • Demonstrated skill in information technology with moderate competencies in IT networks health information exchange networks, electronic health record functionality standards and use of the Internet, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other software necessary to perform the work required.

     

    MANAGER, PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE RESOURCES

     

    • AHIMA has an immediate need for a Manager, Professional Practice Resources   to Managing short- and long-term projects, using the following management skills such as Research, Planning, Budgeting, Facilitation and management of teams, Change management, Progress Reporting
    • Creating and developing timely resources for the advancement of members
    • Forecasting future roles and skills for HIM professionals in coding and data management roles
    • Creating and developing position statements, practice briefs and guidelines for publication related to HIM with emphasis on coding, reimbursement based on coding, and regulatory compliance issues involving code sets.
    • Leading or serving as liaison to AHIMA alliance organizations, task forces, and/or practice councils
    • Communicating products and resources in a variety of methods
      • Writing for AHIMA publications and other publications as requested
      • Speaking for AHIMA meetings, CSA meetings and other organizations as requested
      • Teaching in AHIMA seminars and other educational settings
      • Interviews with health care industry and other news sources
    • Responding to member questions and request for resources relative to HIM professional practice

    Responsibilities include:

    • Provide content expertise for products, seminars, and services.  Assist in identifying content experts, identify necessary project steps, review new and revised products, and work with team to develop new products.
    • Track healthcare changes that affect coding, including technical issues, actual code changes, regulatory issues, and reimbursement policy. Advise AHIMA on pertinent technical updates to incorporate into product content.
    • Coordinate volunteer activities that relate to coding products and services.  Provide technical expertise to certification team on request. Participate in coding related communities of practice, as appropriate.
    • Respond to professional practice needs about coded data issues and provide references and resources to members in an instructional and professional manner through the CoP and Body of Knowledge channels.
    • Write articles for publication for the Journal or other AHIMA or non-AHIMA publications related to coding on request.
    • Represent AHIMA by taking interviews as requested by public relations and giving presentations when required on behalf of the association.

    Knowledge, skills, experience, and certifications required to perform the job:

    • Masters Degree preparation in related field preferred
    • Have at least ten years of HIM practice experience in a managerial or consulting role is optimal, with a variety of HIM experience (in terms of healthcare settings and positions held).
    • Have knowledge of coding and classification systems across health care settings and related professional practice required, include familiarity with ICD10CM and ICD10PCS.
    • Be an experienced health information manager with registered health information administrator or registered health information technician credentials. For work with clinical coding content, the CCS, or CCS-P credential is helpful.
    • Demonstrated superior written and verbal communication skills, conveying credibility, professionalism and AHIMA values and principles in informal conversations with callers, trade journal interviews, and formal speaking engagements.
    • Demonstrated group leadership and facilitation skills in order to direct the activities of volunteer task forces and councils toward a finished, professional product, using advanced project management skills as described above.
    • The ability to research topics thoroughly, assimilate information correctly, and communicate effectively in writing to produce articles, position statements, practice briefs, and guidelines that are focused, accurate and understandable.
    • Demonstrated HIM skills and correct application of code sets in order to provide sound technical review of products and accurate responses to member questions.
    • Demonstrated skill in information technology with moderate competencies in IT networks, use of the Internet, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other software necessary to perform the work required.
