Standards and Industry Activities

There has been a recent renewed interest in health information exchange (HIE). The launch of a national health infrastructure initiative in the United States in May 2004—with the goal of providing an electronic health record for every American within the next decade—is leading a information technology interoperability transform in the healthcare industry, just as information technology (IT) has transformed other industries in the past. In his State of the Union address on January 20, 2004, President George W. Bush stated: “By computerizing health records, we can avoid dangerous medical mistakes, reduce costs, and improve care.”

The HIE implementation challenge will be to create a standardized interoperable model that is patient centric, trusted, longitudinal, scalable, sustainable, and reliable.  HIM principles will be critical to the success of HIEs/RHIOs and the nationwide health information network.  HIM professionals should be seeking out opportunities to contribute to the establishment of HIE standards for the quality of data content, data mapping, and clinical documentation.
