COMMISSION ON ACCREDITATION FOR HEALTH INFORMATICS AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT EDUCATION

 

POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL

 

  • HIM Baccalaureate Degree Program Educator
  • HIM Associate Degree Program Educator

 

 

SUBJECT:  COMMISSIONER

CATEGORY:  Educator - Baccalaureate Degree Program in Health Information Management

SELECTION:  Elected by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) active members

TERM LENGTH:  4 Years

 

The commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) establishes, maintains, and promotes appropriate standards of quality for educational programs in health information management and provides recognition through accreditation for educational programs, which meet or exceed these minimum standards.  Commissioners review reports from the Panel of Accreditation Reviewers of accreditation site visits, focused reviews and summary reports from the Annual Program Assessment Report database for Health Information Management (HIM) and Health Informatics (HI) programs to determine programmatic accreditation status.  The Commission also develops standards, policies and procedures for accreditation services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

 

The Educator-Baccalaureate Degree Program minimally should

 

  • Be a full-time faculty member in an accredited Baccalaureate Degree HIM Program
  • Have a minimum of three years experience as an educator
  • Demonstrate proven leadership skills
  • Be an Innovative thinker
  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge base in health information management/health informatics
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills
  • Be a team player
  • Hold at least a masters degree

 

It is preferred that an Educator-Baccalaureate Degree HIM Program demonstrate the following characteristics

  • Evidence of scholarly activities
  • Previous accreditation experience as a Panel member or participation in the accreditation process on campus
  • Advanced degree at the doctoral level
  • Previous experience in governance at a Board level (ex. business, academic, association)
  • Experience with online educational delivery

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand and articulate CAHIIM’s mission, vision, values, strategies, policies, programs, services, and strengths  and speak and advocate for CAHIIM accreditation
  • Perform duties of CAHIIM responsibly and uphold the “Code of Good Practice” of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors”
  • Attend two face-to-face Board meetings, annually and attend approximately seven to nine conference call Board meetings.  Participate actively in all Board meetings.  Vote on all issues coming before the Board and volunteer for CAHIIM subcommittee work.
  • Know the CAHIIM Standards for Programmatic Accreditation and CAHIIM’s policies and procedures.
  • Accept program review assignments and meet obligations for complete and timely program reviews as assigned
  • Participate in the evaluation of Commission staff members, activities, operations, and decision-making practices to maintain and promote CAHIIM’s standing as the primary organization for ensuring quality of educational programs in health information management and health informatics through accreditation.
  • Refer matters of potential significance or concern to the CAHIIM chair and staff liaisons
  • Participate as an Observer for a program site visit in the second commission year
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

 

Avoiding Conflicts

 

The Educator- Associate Degree HIM Program will

 

  • Serve CAHIIM as a whole rather than any special interest group or constituency.
  • Understand and fully adhere to the terms and spirit of CAHIIM’s conflicts and dualities and confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements.
  • Avoid conflict or the appearance of a conflict of interest; disclose any possible conflicts or dualities of interest to the Commission in a timely fashion and remove yourself from access to any materials and/or deliberations which could manifest a conflict or appearance of conflict.
  • Maintain independence, objectivity and a sense of fairness, ethics, and personal integrity dictate.

Timeline for the 2010 Nomination and Election Process:

  

  • January 29                   Deadline for the "Application to Serve" "Elected positions
  • February/March           Nominating Committee to review nominations
  • March/April                  Nominating Committee to conduct telephone interviews with nominees and confirm candidates
  • March                           Candidates provide profile and other information for the AHIMA ballot to appear in the June Journal
  • May 24 - June 4          Candidate Community of Practice is open to the members for online discussion with candidates
  • June 7 - June 25         Polls Open for voting – subject to change
  • By Mid- July                 Announcement of the 2010 AHIMA Election Results
