Customizable Letters of Intent for HIM Professionals

The House of Delegates Team on Professional Development and Recognition developed two letters that are resources to support and promote the health information management (HIM) profession. One letter is available for use by Component State Associations (CSAs) and one for individual HIM professionals.

The customizable letters can be sent in response to job advertisements for roles that HIM professionals are qualified for but are not specifically being sought. Examples include clinical documentation improvement, privacy officers, security officers, information officers, information technology roles or revenue cycle roles. These are only a few examples that HIM professionals are uniquely qualified to fill. Remember, the letters should be customized.

CSA Letter

CSAs choosing to send a letter would be responding on behalf of the CSA and profession – taking the opportunity to promote its members and the profession. CSAs will want to consider a coordinated effort and identify a responsible party to oversee the process. CSA members looking for employment may find this support very helpful in a job search. After a process is identified and documented, it should be communicated to members.

Letter Instructions:
  • Review content and customize to reflect your CSA’s information and needs
  • If sending a hard copy letter, print on CSA letterhead and professional quality paper
  • Follow up with the contact person or Human Resources department within the specified time frame
  • Keep a copy on file

Individual Letter

Individuals choosing to send a letter would be communicating on behalf of themselves – taking the opportunity to highlight the profession and their own unique qualifications.

Letter Instructions:
  • Review content and customize to meet your needs
  • If sending a hard copy letter, print on letterhead and professional quality paper
  • Follow up with the contact person or Human Resources department within the specified time frame
  • Keep a copy on file
