Each year, the Assembly on Education (AOE) holds a summer symposium for new and experienced HIM educators.  This year, the conference will be held in Louisville Kentucky from July 12th through July 16th.   The conference is designed to meet the needs of instructors in academic centers offering certificate and degree programs in health information management and coding.  Full time, part time, and adjunct faculty are encouraged to register for the symposium.

Faculty Development Institute (FDI)

The Institute opens on Saturday, July 12th with a two- day program for new educators. Experienced educators find FDI helpful too as it focuses on teaching fundamentals, an area that many educators appreciate reviewing once a year.  This year’s programming includes:

  • Learning how to maximize AHIMA resources
  • Preparing students for certification exams
  • Assessments workshop
  • Adjunct management tools
  • Using the AHIMA Virtual Lab in the classroom

Assembly on Education (AOE)

The AOE Summer Symposium runs Monday, July 14th through Wednesday, July 16th.  The symposium offers general sessions in the morning with break out tracks in the afternoon.  This year’s tracks include:

Master’s degree track Baccalaureate degree track
Associate degree track Coding track
Faculty Leadership track Technical track
Research track Best Practice track

There are over 50 speakers covering a wide range of topics such as:

  • Web2.0 Applications and DVD virtual tour
  • Reaching Diverse Student Populations
  • Teaching Health Law: a Case Study Approach
  • Scholarship and Research for HIM
  • Developing a Master’s Degree Curriculum
  • Teaching Medical Terminology in new ways
  • Podcasting in the Classroom
  • Partnering with Local Employers for PPEs

 Special Sessions/Activities

  • On Sunday, an advanced CAHIIM workshop will be held for existing program directors.  This will provide program directors with a chance to speak with CAHIIM leadership and commissioners.  CAHIIM is the accrediting organization for all health information management and informatics programs. This workshop is included in your AOE and/or FDI registration and is not priced separately.
  • On Tuesday, you can participate in an optional fun activity, a dinner cruise.  Float down the Ohio River in an authentic steamboat while enjoying a sunset dinner cruise.
  • On Wednesday, there will be a special program to match new educators with mentors to assist them through the year.

Who Should Attend?

The AOE is designed to appeal to all educators, researchers, and individuals looking to strengthen  HIM program offerings in their institution.  New educators and program administrators will find the FDI to be particularly helpful as they ramp up new programs.

What New educators attending AOE for the first time in 2007 had to say:

"As a soon-to-be Program Director,

the information was just what I needed. "

"As a new educator, this was a fabulous

way to start off my “new” career."

"I think the most beneficial item that I

was able to take away from the overall

conference were the sample lesson plans."

What Returning educators attending AOE for the first time in 2007 had to say:

"Learning all the things I did not know I

needed to know, and networking with

other educators. "

"I think the program helped me realize what my job

really entails now. It helped me see the gaps in our program,

and with this information I feel I can prepare corrective action

plans and move forward in getting my program on the best

track that I can. I also really liked the tracks - I thought that was very

smart way of getting the most information to the largest number

of people in the shortest amount of time."

"The pace was great!  Everyone was helpful and friendly.

I have been attending AOE Faculty Development

Institute for four years, and they get better and better each year"
