AHIMA Diversity Management Task Force

We have all at one time or another expressed the sentiment, "Thankfully, we're all not alike!" That actually is our recognition of diversity, in its many guises. Racial, physical, gender, religious, orientation and social diversity are only some of the differences we encounter and with which we interact. In an effort to raise awareness and highlight diversity among the AHIMA membership, a Diversity Task Force was appointed and began its charge at the beginning of 2000.

The goals of the task force are to promote and encourage diversity in our profession by analyzing data, recommending promotional activities, identifying ways to improve networking, and considering how to provide mentoring and role models for leadership development. Efforts to accomplish these goals provided the opportunity to develop the AHIMA Diversity Management Program. Though the Program—a program that we will encourage each component association to emulate—is still in it's early stages, it is a "living" model that is designed to grow and change in sync with our Association.

Our focus for 2001 will be on recruiting students, securing access to leadership skill training materials for AHIMA members, and providing support for CSA diversity management efforts. Communication will be the main vehicle for increasing diversity awareness and visibility. A brochure, AHIMA Diversity Management Program, is the initial communication product of the Task Force efforts. We look forward to your comments regarding this premier edition.

The brochure also contains suggestions for what you can do to celebrate and promote diversity. We encourage you to take these ideas to your next association meeting for discussion.

Together, let's celebrate diversity!
