Coding Training — Acute Care

STAGE I: Awareness, Assessments, Foundation Training
Recommended training: 3-6 hours

ICD-10 Awareness Training

AHIMA Awareness Training prepares coders for ICD-10-CM/PCS implementation by introducing the new code sets through two overview webinars: Getting Started with ICD-10-CM, What Coders Need to Know and Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS, What Coders Need to Know. Each presentation familiarizes coders with the organization and structure of the new code set and the similarities and differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10. The discussion covers coding conventions and introduces the system’s guidelines. Each webinar is 1.5 hours long.

Readiness Assessments

AHIMA’s readiness assessments are invaluable tools that measure coders' readiness for ICD-10-CM/PCS by gauging foundational coder knowledge. Focused assessments are also available to gauge knowledge in specific topic areas. The foundational PCS and CM assessments each consist of 100 questions, while the focus assessments provide 20 questions each. Assessments are optional and sold separately.

Foundation Training Courses

AHIMA’s online foundation training courses include foundational training in medical sciences to prepare coders for the transition to ICD-10-CM/PCS. Topics covered include: ICD-10-CM A&P-focused neoplasms, pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, and the respiratory system; ICD-10-CM/PCS A&P-focused circulatory system; ICD-10-PCS A&P-focused central and peripheral nervous systems, and the musculoskeletal system. These captivating courses include interactive activities and four-color illustrations. The topics are delivered in six, two-hour training courses sold separately.

• Delivers comprehensive CM coding instructions

The AHIMA ICD-10-CM course bundle thoroughly prepares coders for the transition to the new ICD-10 coding system. Coders review the ICD-10-CM code set organization and guidelines and learn how to accurately assign ICD-10-CM codes to case scenarios. The course bundle includes a comprehensive ICD-10-CM overview followed by 22 one-hour modules focused on each specific chapter of ICD-10-CM. Coders in all settings can benefit from the course overview. Coders in the acute care setting must take all 22 chapter-focused courses to be proficient in ICD-10-CM. This engaging course bundle is approximately 28 hours long and includes color illustrations and interactive activities

The AHIMA ICD-10-PCS coding course bundle thoroughly prepares coders for the transition to the new ICD-10-PCS coding system. Coders review the ICD-10-PCS code set organization and guidelines and learn how to accurately assign ICD-10-PCS codes to case scenarios. The course bundle includes a comprehensive ICD-10-PCS overview, followed by 10 modules focused on specific root operation groupings. Coders in all settings can benefit from the course overview. It is imperative that coders in acute care be instructed on all 10 of the root operation modules. This engaging course bundle is approximately 24 hours and includes color illustrations and interactive activities. Note: Modules should only be taken individually if coders have previous ICD-10-PCS training and require refresher training in certain topic areas.

Recommended training: 2-4 hours

The AHIMA ICD-10-CM and -PCS Practice Coding Exercises provide comprehensive practice for outpatient and inpatient coders. Coders gain practical, real-world coding experience on in-depth case scenarios, allowing them to demonstrate proficiency in ICD-10-CM/PCS coding. Each module is approximately 2 hours in duration.
